And the other day, my blood really got to boiling.

It all started on an airplane last January, flying back to Florida from Chicago. My seatmate, Richard, was pumped up about his New Year’s resolution.
“This year, I only made one resolution,” he told me. “I’m going to write a book. I booked this writer’s conference, and I’ve already written two chapters.
“In fact, I wrote one chapter in the airport this morning!” he said, showing me a sheaf of notebook paper full of tiny, neat writing.
I’m a big goal setter, so I could understand Richard’s enthusiasm. And I know an author who’s written a bestseller every year for the past four years. So his resolution was definitely doable. I fully expected to see his book in Barnes and Noble by next year.
Then the “Disease” Takes Over…
And Your Dream Goes Right Out the Window
Fast forward to just a few weeks ago…
I ran into Richard in a Starbucks downtown.
He’d been so full of energy the last time I’d seen him. So motivated, so determined. I was certain that he would have finished the whole book by now.
He wouldn’t meet my eyes as he admitted, “I haven’t exactly written anything since I last saw you.”
“What happened?” I imagined the worst. Maybe he’d been knocked flat by a serious illness. Maybe his house had burned down. Maybe his business had collapsed.
Richard shrugged. “I’ve just been so busy…” he said. “With work and family, I haven’t had time to write.”
I couldn’t say anything. I just sat there, slack-jawed, unable to speak.
“But hey,” he said, “January’s not too far away. Next year, I’ll make a resolution to write that book. And I’ll really get it done.”
I Wanted to Scream, “Screw Your Resolutions!”
We must have chatted a little bit after that – I don’t really remember.
I had to clench my jaw so tight it hurt, just to keep from saying what I really wanted to say…
“Screw your resolutions!”
It made me mad. Madder than I should have been, I admit. After all, it was Richard’s problem, not mine. His lack of dedication was ruining Richard’s dreams, not mine.
Now you might be thinking, “What’s the big deal?”

You see, one of the reasons he got me so fired up is because I’ve heard his little speech a thousand times.

After my chance meeting with Richard, I went home. I stomped around for a while and slammed some cupboards and doors. I complained loudly to my wife, Karin, about how stupid Richard was being.
Finally, she stopped me. “Bob,” she said gently. “You’re not being fair.
“Maybe Richard doesn’t know how simple it is to complete his goal. That’s not his fault – he doesn’t know any better.”
And that’s when it dawned on me.
Richard – and so many other people like him – wasn’t stupid or unmotivated or lazy.
He was suffering from a serious affliction. A “disease” that was warping his perception of his goal, and what he needed to do to achieve it.
